Taxes

Keep a W-2 for 7 years.

The IRS can look back three years as a rule, six when income was understated, and longer when a return was never filed. Seven years covers every ordinary case.

What it is

W-2 is a form under Taxes, also called Wage and Tax Statement. One arrives for each tax year, so a missing year shows up as a gap. It is due to arrive by January 31 each year.

What Thaw takes off the page

Issued by · For · Tax year · Employer · Employee · Employer EIN · Wages · Federal tax withheld

Every value is copyable and correctable, and a correction is never overwritten. Numbers that identify you (account and policy numbers, VINs) stay sealed and are blanked from search.

When to shred

7 years. after its date. When the batch is past that, the Checkup lists it as safe to shred, and nothing is deleted until you say so.
